purchasing a new computer
I think that a gateway computer system with intel pentium processing that has single or dual internal cd drive thats readable and writeable wil be a good choice for your needs.it may have two serial ports, windows xp or vista service pack2 for updates, several usb ports for otherdevices. it also has 512 mega bytes of ram (storage space.) this pc has a 14 inch color monitor( veiwing screen.) since this p.c. is for personal use it will serve your needs. if you decided to upgrade later you will still have many options rather than buying a new computer.

Here’s some info I found in chapter 5 of computer concepts sections D and E.(LAN’s and WLAN’s)
Local Area Network is how our computers connect to the internet. Whether you’re using broadband, dail up or wireless. People who share networks can keep in touch through e-mails, and instant messaging. While co-workers can share files for work projects. Many of us enjoy playing the multi-player computer games.
Veiw the following …link it describes LAN’S…

Your employer may operate on network hardware that can access company programs or client information. Networked hardware can install one area fax machine or printer to serve all on its network.
Being mindful of viruses or hackers seeking to retrieve your personal information. They can cause harm to your network causing your system to crash. You can protect your network by using a powerstrip, downloading spyware and back up or copy your data in case of hardware failure. Work stations can be protected by anti-virus software and using secure password to access the system.
Here is a link with information on security for LAN’s
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_LAN_security
wireless networks have monitoring software which helps to identify unsecure networks. You can also use encryptions which scramble transmitted data to help protect your system.
